There is more calm among the nurses, which obviously also benefits the patients.

Treant takes an important next step in hospital-wide intelligent medical alerting. In December 2024, the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and Telemetry at the Scheper hospital site in Emmen switched to the innovative software from itemedical, combined with CLB’s Medical Alarm System (MAS). The Medical Device Data Gateway (MDDG) from itemedical filters and delays alarms so that only relevant notifications reach the nurses. This reduces alarm fatigue, increases patient safety, and creates a calmer working and recovery environment. The implementation follows the earlier successful deployment on the paediatric and intensive care units at Treant’s Scheper hospital site in Emmen.

More calm and focus on the workplace

Since the implementation of the MAS, the number of alarms has been drastically reduced. Healthcare professionals now only receive notifications for the patients they are treating. “We see the effect on the floor immediately: there is more calm among the nurses, which obviously also benefits the patients,” says Maik Pastoor, Head of First Cardiac Aid, CCU, and CTU.

Smart technology for efficient care

Itemedical’s MDDG plays a crucial role in the success of the MAS. This intelligent platform seamlessly integrates all medical devices, regardless of brand or type, into CLB’s alarm system. Through intelligent filtering and delay, healthcare providers only receive the notifications that matter. This ensures a more efficient and uninterrupted workflow and increases alertness for critical alerts. The result is a more efficient working method and greater focus on the patient.

Additionally, the data analysis of alarm notifications offers opportunities to further optimize. Although the team is still analyzing the initial insights, they expect this system to yield further improvements in care.

Success through collaboration

The successful implementation of the MAS is the result of close collaboration between Treant, CLB, and itemedical. Thanks to an open and transparent approach, the teams connected and optimized the medical devices without any issues. Regular consultations and strong guidance ensured a smooth implementation.

The project team paid great attention to training and awareness so that colleagues can make optimal use of the system. After all, a mobile phone at the reception does not improve medical alarm management—it is the filtering and delay that make the smartphone a valuable tool.

With the implementation of the MAS and the MDDG, Treant takes a significant step towards a more efficient and safer alarm system for both healthcare providers and patients.
